DBT is a comprehensive cognitive-behavioral treatment that was originally developed by Marsha Linehan, Ph.D., ABPP, to treat chronically suicidal individuals suffering from borderline personality disorder (BPD). It combines cognitive-behavioral techniques designed to change behavior with mindfulness practice designed to promote focus and sense of self. Clients learn and practice skills to better identify and manage their emotions, control their impulses, handle difficult life events, improve their ability to interact effectively with others and gain greater ability to make positive rather than self-destructive choices in their lives.DBT has been found especially effective for those with suicidal and other multiply occurring severely dysfunctional behaviors. Research has shown DBT to be effective in reducing suicidal behavior, psychiatric hospitalization, treatment dropout, substance abuse, anger, and interpersonal difficulties.
